Description

1. The dog is a man’s (best) friend.
2. There is something moving in the bushes, I do not know if it is a man or a beast.
3. Man can talk, an animal cannot.

The basic term for a human being regardless of sex. Singular (plural is frequently suppletive, e.g., ‘people’). NB: The original Swadesh list included this word as ‘person’ in order to avoid misunderstandings, even though the basic English equivalent (in non-PC speech) for the term is also ‘man’. (Kassian et al. 2010)
