Comment: According to Hübschmann < *paya-stāna-. It is debatable whether this etymology is correct, or whether the form comes from *psten. If from *psten, it would require Persian to not have undergone the pan-Iranian change *ps > fš. H's etymology involves a vowel shortening, but vowel length changes are not unheard of.
