Notes:Weeks discusses relation to /cognate/955/ ,white (thing) > cloud' '(1985: 20f). Puhvel proposes a number of posisble etymologies: (i) Lat. albus 'white', (ii) Goth. luftus 'air', (iii) IE A2él-p-, whence, inter alia, Skt alpa 'small', (iv) Cop, further exemplified by Serbian lap 'bog, soil', gk 'scum, mark', (v) Arm amb, Ved abhra- 'cloud' but this is less likely due to -mp- tolerance found elsewhere.
