Citation: Scarborough, Matthew (University of Cambridge/Max Planck Institute for the Science ... Pages: View For Ancient Greek ὀφθαλμός, variants are Boeotian ὄκταλλος, a gloss reported in the grammarian Herodian's treatise Περὶ ὀρθογραφίας (On Correct Spelling), and West Greek ΟΠΤΙΛΛΟΣ (epigraphic at IG IV²,1 121, etc.). Beekes (2010) attempts to assign ὀφθαλμός to a Pre-Greek substrate language, however most other etymological authorities (cf. Chantraine 1968-1980; Frisk 1960-1972) prefer to analyse the beginning of the word as identical with PIE *h₃ekʷ- found elsewhere in Greek as a compositional member °οψ, in a derived noun ὄμμα < *h₃ókʷ-mn̥, etc. The variants may well support a connection of initial ὀφ- with PIE *h₃ékʷ-, however a convincing explanation that accounts for the remainder of the word is lacking. Contamination of inherited material with a substrate language is at least theoretically possible. Modern Greek μάτι is from ὀμμάτιον, diminutive of Ancient Greek ὄμμα, which is a regularly formed -mn- neuter to inherited *h₃ekʷ-, i.e. *h₃ékʷ-mn̥ (cf. NIL s.v. h₃ekʷ-).
