Citation: Beekes, Robert. 2010. Etymological Dictionary of Greek. Leiden: Brill. Pages: View The Ancient Greek s-stem neuter λιπός 'fat' is an inner-Greek innovation from λίπα (adv.) which is usually used in Homer in the phrase ἀλείψασθαι λίπ’ ἐλαίῳ 'anoint oneself richly with oil'. This is usually connected to a root noun formed to *lei̯p- 'stick' ('kleben bleiben' LIV²). Cf. Sanskrit nasal-infix present *li-m-p-áti 'to smear'. Lith. lìpti (3.sg.), limpù 'to stick, be sticky', etc.
